Lung Surgery

Precise Thoracic Surgical Care for Lung Conditions

Lung surgery is a group of procedures used to treat diseases of the lungs and the lining around them. Depending on the condition, surgery may remove a small part of the lung, a lobe, or in selected cases a whole lung.

Whether surgery is needed, and which approach is used, depends on the diagnosis, lung function and overall health. Many procedures can be done through keyhole techniques in suitable patients.

When Lung Surgery May Be Considered

A thoracic surgeon assesses a range of lung and chest conditions. Surgery is only one of the options.

Not every lung condition needs surgery. Many are managed with medicines or other treatments. The decision and timing follow a detailed evaluation.

Lung nodules & tumours

Spots or masses found on imaging.

Selected lung cancers

When surgery is an appropriate option.

Infection & abscess

Chronic lung infection or localized bronchiectasis.

Bullae & collapsed lung

Air-filled spaces or repeated pneumothorax.

Pleural disease

Empyema or thickened lung lining.

Chest injury

Injuries of the chest wall and pleura.

Procedures

Types of Lung Surgery

The approach is chosen for each patient after evaluation.

Lobectomy

Removal of one lobe of the lung. It may be considered for certain tumours or disease confined to one lobe.

Segmentectomy / Wedge Resection

Removal of a smaller part of the lung, used for small lesions or when preserving lung tissue matters.

Pneumonectomy

Removal of an entire lung, reserved for selected patients when extensive disease cannot be treated by a smaller operation.

VATS (Keyhole Surgery)

Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery uses small incisions and a camera. It may suit selected patients and conditions.

Decortication & Pleural Surgery

Treatment of the lining around the lung, such as removing thickened tissue or infected material so the lung can expand.

Bullectomy & Pneumothorax Surgery

Surgery for air-filled lung spaces or repeated lung collapse, used when other treatment is not enough.

Diagnosis

Detailed Evaluation Before Any Decision

CT Chest

Detailed images of lungs, airways and chest.

PET-CT

May be used in selected cases to assess a lesion.

Bronchoscopy & Biopsy

A look inside the airways and a tissue sample if needed.

Lung & Heart Fitness Tests

Breathing and heart checks to judge safety for surgery.

Inside the lungs

How the Lungs Work

Air enters through the windpipe, travels through branching airways called bronchi, and reaches tiny air sacs called alveoli. There, oxygen passes into the blood and carbon dioxide is removed. When part of the lung is diseased, surgery may be considered to treat that part while preserving healthy lung where possible.

Windpipe (trachea)

The main airway that carries air down to the lungs.

Bronchi

Branching airways that spread air through each lobe.

Alveoli

Tiny air sacs where oxygen enters the blood.

Recovery

Recovery & Follow-Up

After surgery, patients are monitored closely. Breathing exercises, pain control, early movement and regular follow-up guide recovery, which varies between individuals.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is lung surgery?

Lung surgery covers operations on the lung or its lining, used for conditions such as tumours, infections or collapsed lung. Whether it is suitable depends on individual evaluation.

Does every lung problem need surgery?

No. Many lung conditions are managed with medicines, procedures or monitoring. Surgery is considered when it is the most appropriate option for the diagnosis and the patient's health.

What is keyhole (VATS) surgery?

VATS uses small incisions and a camera instead of one large cut. It suits selected patients and conditions, and your surgeon will advise if it is an option.
